Setting Up Forums
Forums can be set up with the help of the bbPress plugin.
To setup forums, you will therefore need to begin by installing the bbPress plugin from the Plugins > Add New section within your WordPress dashboard
Once you have the plugin installed and activated, you can then navigate to the Settings > Forums section within your WordPress dashboard and here you can specify your forum settings.
You can either setup either of the following forums depending on your site needs:
- Group Forums
- Sitewide Forums
- Group and Sitewide Forums
Group Forums provide groups with a dedicated forum. These forums can be created following these steps:
Navigate to the Forums > Add New section within your WordPress dashboard and create a new forum with the type as a “category”.
Go to the Settings > Forums section within your WordPress dashboard and enable the option “Allow BuddyPress Groups to have their own forums”.
Still within the forums section, select the “Group Forums” we created in our first step as the primary forum.
Access your Groups directory page, or rather the page you’ve set up to be your Groups’ page under the Settings >BuddyPress > Pages section.
You can then begin creating a group from the page.
Within step 3, enable the option “Yes. I want this group to have a forum.” and continue to finalize the group creation process.
With the group creation finalized, you will have a forum tab link within the Group.
Sitewide Forums provide a forum area for all members within your site.
To create a sitewide forum;
Navigate to the Pages > Add New section within your WordPress dashboard, set the page title to “forum”, add the [bbp-forum-index] shortcode to the page and publish it.
Ensure that you also save your permalinks from the Settings > Permalinks section within your WordPress dashboard.
Group and Sitewide Forums
Group and Sitewide Forums can be set up by combining all of the steps above involving both Group forums and Sitewide Forums.
